Watering Tips - Landscape Like a Pro

How to Water your Backyard Effectively
Watering your backyard may seem like a simple task. We agree it isn’t rocket science, but there are ways to ensure your lawn maintains healthy growth in your backyard, while ensuring plants and trees flourish. This is crucial when dealing with Las Vegas’s desert landscape.  It’s important to remember that every resident of the Las Vegas Valley must follow their assigned mandatory watering schedules and restrictions.

Quality over Quantity
Most Las Vegas residents think you need to water plants every day. This isn’t usually necessary as the moisture from one deep watering can be used for plant and grass photosynthesis for many days afterwards. The key is to ensure there is plenty of water and to water the dirt around plants. We recommend aiming for moisture at least 2-4 inches deep. It’s not the plant’s leaves or stems that needs watering, it’s the root below. Aiming for the ball of the root below the plant is the best spot to be.
If you are watering with proper care, 2-3 times a week is sufficient in most areas as watering every single day can drown a plant.

Know the Right Time for Watering
In Las Vegas, if you are looking to get the most out of your watering, then it is important to stop excess evaporation. If you water in the middle of the day when the sun is high in the sky it can mean that the majority water on the surface evaporates before it has had proper chance to soak into the plants. We recommend opting to water during a cool part of the day, such as first thing in the morning or after the sun has set.  This is why irrigation systems with automatic timers are such a great tool!Have a Time
A timer can be connected directly to the watering device and the frequency can be selected. The amount of time needed and the pressure of the watering can be set through an irrigation time or sprinkler system. This is a great way to conserve water and ensure you don’t miss a day! This even covers vacations or emergencies where the last thing on your mind is watering the lawn.

Don’t Over-Water
We find that one of the most common issues is ‘waterlogging’.  This may seem like a good idea but plants need oxygen too, and too much water can mean that it is much harder for grass and plant roots to get the oxygen they so dearly need. Though it is important to be thorough, if any area starts to puddle or look damp then it may be time to scale back the watering efforts.

Distribute Water Evenly
This is why we recommend sprinklers and sprinkler systems on top of watering canisters. Water can get too highly concentrated in one area or even flow away from the roots of the plant or grass if you are watering too much on any one specific spot.Mulch can also be useful, this reduces the chance of water run-off from the desired area and can prevent the sun from drying out the water before it has had time to provide proper nourishment to the plants or grass.

Conclusion
Proper watering is a major key to ensuring your backyard thrives. If you follow the steps above, you can be confident your yard will thrive with a lush look.  As always, if you’d like to speak directly to a professional give Las Vegas Lawn & Grass Company a call at 702-213-5712.
