Lawn Mowing
Is there anything that most customers dread more than having to get out in the heat every week or so to mow their lawns?  With our comprehensive lawn mowing service, we take this burden from you so you can relax on your time off.  Let's dive into lawn mowing and the basics.  Just like all living plants, the grass in your yard goes through the process of photosynthesis in order to grow and prosper.   Lawn mowing that is too frequent reduces the amount of  photosynthesis and causes a less tolerant environment. This can cause your grass to be more prone to weed invasion- which can reduce plant strength. Although it’s possible to successfully maintain a closely cut lawn, the shorter root system will result in a need for more frequent watering and fertilization to try to make up for the reduced ability to obtain water and nutrients from the soil. This is why we maintain your lawn at the highest cutting height that looks good and is acceptable for the intended use of the grass. For residential lawns, we recommend a cutting height of 2 to 3 inches.

How to Properly Mow Grass
We mow lawns using the one-third rule. This rule says that you should never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade during any one instance. If we are aiming for a mowing height of 2 inches, the height of the grass should not exceed 3 inches before it is mowed back to 2 inches.

Why? Turfgrasses, like other green plants, provide themselves with the necessary nutrients to grow through the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy (sun) into chemical energy. During this process, light energy is captured and utilized to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.
When too much of the leaf blade is removed during the lawn mowing, there is significantly less area remaining to absorb the light energy to allow the process of photosynthesis to take place. Therefore, the grass will produce less food for nourishment and result in a less healthy plant that is susceptible to insect damage and disease. Mowing a lawn too frequently also inhibits the growth of the roots, leading to the creation of a small, shallow root system. During the dry season, shallow roots can dry out which leads to the inevitable death of the plant or grass. Large root systems below ground allow grass to grow to a desirable level and can withstand the hot summer season.

Lawn Maintenance Guidance
  • Select the Right Height. Selecting an appropriate mowing height of two to three inches is crucial to the health of your lawn. Ensure you set the blade to the appropriate height and cut your grass frequently enough so no more than the top third of the grass is removed. This will encourage a healthier lawn and underlying roots.
  • Don’t Cut Too Much. Removing too much grass from your lawn can cause a loss of moisture at a more rapid pace and create an environment for weed and disease infestation.
  • Keep Blades Sharp.  Lawn mower blades need to be able to produce an even cut. An un-sharpened blade will cause the ripping of grass tissue. Ripped grass tissue can cause a tan or brown tint to the lawn.
  • Leave Lawn Clippings on Grass. Letting this mulching process play out is crucial to your lawn's health. Grass clippings can reduce the need for fertilizer because of the nutrients that are inside. Grass clippings break down easily and only cause issues if an excessive amount is on the top of the surface.
  • Mix Up Your Route. Mowing causes the grass to lean to one side, causing patterns to develop. It’s important to switch directions and routes with hopes of avoiding to much pressure in one direction.

The ideal lawnmower for your lawn will provide a smooth cut. There are several factors to consider when choosing the best mower for you. A push mower or walk-behind mower is ideal if you have a half acre or less. Push Mower varieties include:
  • Manual mower: Manual push mowers are environmentally friendly and often quiet enough to use in the morning. This is a great choice for small, level lawns.
  • Electric lawn mower: Whether you have a cord or cordless (battery-operated) mower,  electric machines are less noisy than their gas counterparts. Corded mowers require access to an electrical outlet, and battery-operated types may require you to charge mid-process. Electric lawn mowers charge times will vary by battery type and charger, ranging from half an hour to several hours.
  • Gas-Powered Mower: Perfect for mid-sized lawns, gas mowers are the conventional option for yards up to half an acre. A gas-powered lawn mower is more powerful and typically easier to maneuver than the electric counterparts. It also is more powerful.  Most crank with a pull start function that eliminates the need to use the pull cord. Keep in mind, you will need to buy fuel to power up.
  • Mulching Lawn Mower: This types cut and leaves grass clippings behind as they go. Mulching mowers have some benefits, including guaranteeing the addition of nutrients and spreading of healthy microorganisms into the soil.
A riding mower is good for yards larger than half an acre. Riding mower varieties include:
  • Riding Lawn Mower:  These are best for big and sloped lawns, a riding lawn mower is the best option for large yards because they allow the rider to cover a large area in a short amount of time.
