Xeriscaping - How To

If you've never heard the term 'xeriscaping', you're not alone.  More recently, Las Vegas landscaping has turned to xeriscaping to help craft desert landscapes without overusing water.

Xeriscaping itself means landscaping in a way where each structure, design or tool is in place to help reduce the use of excess water from irrigation systems. This makes xeriscaping the most environmentally friendly form of landscaping Las Vegas. In fact, there are numerous other benefits to landscaping while conserving water:
  • Water use is restricted by the Southern Nevada Water Authority
  • Using too much water becomes expensive
  • Las Vegas is in the midst of a serious drought, everyone must do their part

Xeriscaping can produce attractive results while conserving water.  There are tons of ways to craft desert landscapes and decorate your backyard in a way that fits you.
  1. The most important thing to remember, regardless of what landscaping route you choose, is to spend enough time planning and designing before having any work done.  The last thing you want is to pay for a job that you don't end up loving, it's your home after all! This is especially important when landscaping with xeriscaping procedures as you must have water conservation included in each part of the landscape.
  2. Next you must prepare the ground and soil with amendment which includes a compost that should match the needs of the plants in your garden- if you choose to have one.  If you do have plants in your landscape, you want to ensure they are plants that are tolerant to the type of soil where they are planted.
  3. Designing efficient irrigation (sprinkler repair systems) is also a big step.  All water being produced should be used on grass, lawn or plants- minimizing waste is the key to a good xeriscaping project.  You'll need to make sure the water is distributed evenly to plants that need it, while doing so at the correct time of day to avoid water loss through evaporation.  One trick to help conserve water is to use mulch, which keeps the temperature of plant and grass roots cooler, helping to hold in moisture.
  4. Finally, the last step is the keep-up and maintenance needed each week to your desert landscape. All plants, lawn and flowers needed to be trimmed to the proper length to avoid bloating.  By designing an xeriscaping landscape that is efficient, your garden and lawn should grow at a healthy consistency.
