Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Let’s help you make an informed decision when it comes to your next landscaping Las Vegas project.  Below is a list of questions & answers that can help guide your decision:

Landscaping
Q: What does a landscaper do?
Landscapers work ranges from outdoor architectural and design plans to building and installing hardscaping for our customers. Our landscapers have professional training in soil drainage, hardscaping (installing concrete paths & walkways, gazebos & patios, building water structures, etc.), and planting. They come with the proper equipment to handle even the most strenuous landscaping projects.

Most landscapers are also landscape architects and designers. The job titles can be compared with employees in home building: these building and/or landscape architects must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass a licensed exam to secure their credentials. A landscape designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a sanctioned license to perform their work.

Q: What is a good landscape design for the desert?
A great desert landscape would incorporate your home’s natural surroundings and include plants, trees, shrubs and other flora that are sustainable in a desert environment.  Depending on your lifestyle, we can design low maintenance landscape designs that won’t require a lot of on-going maintenance or higher maintenance landscapes.  We strive to reflect and enhance your family’s lifestyle and preferences through our landscape designs

Q: What will it cost?
A frequent question we receive as a landscaping company centers on the cost of a landscape design for your property.   There’ no simple answer for this question.  When estimating cost, we take the following factors into account:
  • Size of yard
  • Desired features
  • Materials requested
  • Plants requested
  • Your location
Once we have this information we can provide you a more specific and accurate quote!  We’ll work closely with you to ensure that the cost of the landscape project fits your budget.

Q: What is garden landscaping?
Garden landscaping or gardening is the art of growing plants and can range from taking care of one plant to an entire garden with a variety of plant-life. Landscape design or architecture is the practice of enriching one's yard with plants and hardscape aesthetics for practical purposes.

Q: Do you charge for estimates or consultation?
No, we don’t.  Call or fill out our submission form to get your Free Quote today.

Q: How much does landscaping cost?
Landscaping costs range from $300–$5000 on average for a small project (less than 1,000 square feet) to $10,000 and more for bigger, more complex landscaping projects (over 10,000 square feet).  Our professional landscaping contractor service works with clients to create a your backyard landscape look and feel the way you want it, from sprucing up outdoor areas to installing water irrigation systems. The American Society of Landscape Architects suggests that homeowners budget the cost of a major landscaping project at 5-10 percent of their home’s value.

Q: Why don’t you lay plastic under granite?
The problem with using plastic under granite is that it eventually disintegrates and cracks allowing weeds to sprout. Not only does this when shreds of torn plastic are peaking through the granite, finding the actual root of the weed can became difficult.  Instead, we recommend pre-emergent herbicides  for more efficient weed prevention.

Q: How do we prevent weed growth?
Las Vegas Lawn & Grass Company and our trusted and professional contractors provide pre-emergent spray treatments with fertilization for landscape turf and xeriscaping to control weed growth.

Q: How should I  water my backyard landscape?
Landscape usually thrives best with a timed drip irrigation system.  Irrigation systems for landscaping vary based on your goals for the property and water budget.  It’s a good idea to have a sprinkler system in place to provide the hydration needed for your plants, trees and other landscape elements.   We can help design & install an efficient water system for you.

Q: What is the best way to invest in my backyard landscape?
Landscaping your yard is a long-term investment that can increase your residence’s value.  For commercial properties, a stunning landscape can help promote the quality and professionalism of a company by communicating a profound sense of pride in the environment to the outside world.  Potential clients and customers are sure to be impressed.

Q: When and how often should I aerate my backyard lawn?
Aeration should be performed at least annually,  and  ideally semi-annually.  Aerations should be completed before weeds begin to bloom, otherwise weed seedlings will  germinate and spread and be harder to control.

Fertilizer
Q: How often is fertilizer application needed?
The ideal time for fertilizer service is late-winter through fall.  We recommend between 4-5 fertilizations throughout the year to ensure proper nutrient growth.

Q: How should I apply fertilizer to plants?
For the initial fertilizer application of the year, one should apply granular fertilizer by hand or with a spreader onto the soil surface of the targeted plants.  After the fertilizer is laid, use a hoe or garden fork to work the fertilizer into the top 3 to 5 inches of the soil.

Q: When should I fertilize my lawn and grass?
The ideal time to fertilize your backyard is in the spring time.  The ideal soil temperature is 55 degrees.  You can tell when the soil warms up to 55 degrees as the lilacs begin to blossom and the grass starts to grow.  In Las Vegas, you'll want to fertilize by the beginning of April.

Q: What is guano?
It is accumulated excrement (feces) of bats, that is highly valued as fertilizer.  This bat guano is found in caves around the world.  In addition to a fertilizer, bat guano can be used as a natural fungicide and controls nematodes in soil.  It also acts as a compost activator, accelerating the decomposition process.

Q: What is the best type of fertilizer?
We recommend a complete fertilizer with two times as much phosphorus as nitrogen and potassium.  These fertilizers are typically easy to find at your local home goods store.

Sprinkler & Irrigation
Q: What size sprinkler do I need?
Each sprinkler head has a different level performance based on how much pressure and flow it requires for operation. Sprinklers usually operate in a large variety of flows by adjusting the nozzle to match your intended flow capability. We can work with you to determine what your water supply, well or pump’s capability is so that we can recommend the ideal sprinkler system for your property.

Q: How often should my irrigation system be checked?

It is important to have your irrigation system & water back-flow inhibitor inspected prior to the summer months.  These inspections, and possible early repairs, can save you hundreds of dollars down the road due to broken or cracked pipes.
